Rules for Basketball

THE TEAM

Teams are made up of 3 - 5 players with a 3 players on the court. Remaining players are substitutes and can only enter the game in between ball stoppage, timeouts or due to injury.

THE COURT

The gym will be sectioned into 2 courts prior to game play. Each game will be played on a half court. There is a “no man’s land” from the top of the key on one court to the other top of the key on the other court.

The “no man’s land” is defined as an area where the ball can be played by both sides of the courts.

BOUNDARIES

Standard size basketball court rule applies. The ball must be carried out to the no man’s land after a defensive rebound in order to attempt to score on the basket. If the ball goes past the no man’s land into the other court, the ball is out of play and awarded to the team that did not touch the ball last.

THE START OF THE GAME

Team captains are to determine who takes first possession of the ball by simply playing paper rock or scissors.

The ball must be checked to the opposing team before game play begins and after each point scored. The ball must be passed off to a team mate before attempting to dribble to or shoot at the basket.

GAME PLAY

The object of the game is to score as many points as possible before game play expires. Team with the higher point total wins. All players have a 10 minute warm up before game play. After warm up, the clock is set to 17 minutes allowing 2 minutes for official warm up/team strategizing. At the 15 minute mark, the actual game play begins. Every basket counts as 1 point. Scores will be kept by the teams that are playing. There will be a court monitor in case of any discrepancies.

SCORING

Each win equals 2 points. A tie is 1 point. A loss is 0 points.

At the end of the game, teams are responsible to report/record their own team score. Failure to do so can result in a default loss. If both teams do not have a recorded score, the game will be recorded as a tie.
